The Daedaleans considered magi dangerous, and wanted to eliminate magick and other supernatural phenomena from reality, as well as providing the tools for enlightenment into the hands of the common man. The Traditions largely formed in reaction to the foundation of the Order of Reason. The council has traditionally maintained a seat for each Sphere, with certain Traditions (the Solificati and Ahl-i-Batin) leaving the council, only to be replaced by newer Traditions (the Sons of Ether and Virtual Adepts). The Traditions are a collection of magical traditions united by a common theory of magical Spheres, as well as a common purpose: the defense of magic and myth against the oppressive, static and safe Technocratic paradigm of predictability and control. The Council of Nine Mystic Traditions, or the Traditions, are the default player characters and protagonists in the Mage: The Ascension setting. Knowing the information presented therein, it’s possible to extrapolate all past meeting dates. According to some, the 1967 meeting was the last “big” one, although this conflicts with information found in Mage: The Ascension Second Edition. The Council officially met once every nine years, although no all councillors attended each meeting. Nightshade, for example, represented the Verbena on the Seat of Life. They gather at a round table with ten seats nine seats are emblazoned with the symbols of one of the nine Spheres, while the tenth was historically set aside for guests.Įach Tradition historically had a seat on the council, and one representative from each Tradition would be that Tradition’s representative on the Council, and holder of the seat. The Council meets in special Chambers in Horizon Chantry, located in the city of Concordia in Horizon. The Council of Nine, or simply the Council, is the leadership of the Council of Nine Mystic Traditions.
